- Self-doubt is a good thing
Self-doubt is a good thing
Let me take you back to my first role in sales.
I’m 18, I previously worked on a golf course, I can’t write a proper email.
I’m at my grans funeral, my cousins earning 2x as much as me in sales.
Ego doesn’t like that… I want in.
“Fuck green keeping, I’m going to sales too”, I think to myself
Hired by a leaflet distribution company as their inaugural field sales rep.
My task; door-to-door sales on foot cold calling to businesses.
Think takeaways, laundrettes, hairdressers etc.
(it was brutal)
Day one, I’m petrified.
This world is alien to me.
Self-doubt is my constant companion.
Why?
Because I've never done anything like this before.
This was a novel experience.
I was SOOOO far outside of my comfort zone!!
Here’s the truth about doing new things:
It breeds self-doubt.
You know those nagging thoughts:
"I'm not as good as others."
"I don't deserve success."
"I'm not smart enough."
They aren't just about addiction.
It’s about life’s hurdles.
The more you doubt, the heavier the fear of failure weighs on you.
Criticism cuts deeper.
Shame and guilt become familiar friends, pulling you back to square one.
See, it’s easy to get sucked in… isn’t it?
But, let's hit pause for a sec...
Self-doubt is not the enemy.
It’s a sign you’re on the brink of growth.
Self-doubt is a good thing.
You're venturing into unexplored territory.
Self-doubt is the critical friend who keeps you honest, the one pushing you to think before you leap.
It's your sounding board, ensuring you're fully prepared for the next step.
And when it nudges, it's not to stop you in your tracks…
It’s to propel you forward, ensuring you're truly evolving.
Take a moment to breathe.
Deep, slow breaths.
Ask yourself, "What evidence do I have that supports this doubt?"
Often, you'll find the evidence lacking.
If you’re a high-performer, you’re SUPPOSED to feel self-doubt.
So, what does this all mean for you?
It's about recognising that these feelings (focusing on the negatives and doubting yourself) are part of the challenge…
But they're not the whole story.
You're capable of more than your doubts suggest.
The next time self-doubt hits; tell yourself this:
“Self-doubt is a good thing - it means that I am growing”
Till next Tuesday, keep winning.
Dan
